Shopping for someone who plays American mahjong is easy once you know one thing: they already have a set. What they don't have is the stuff around the set — racks that don't slide, a mat that quiets the shuffle, a bag that fits everything, and at least one item that announces to the world that Wednesday is spoken for.
Here's our guide, sorted by budget. Everything below fits a standard 166-tile American set unless we say otherwise.
Under $25
1. Dice & wind indicator set
Every set is missing dice by the third week, and nobody can remember who's East. A weighted pair plus a four-sided wind indicator in a lidded dish is the gift that gets used every single game. Game Night Hosting — $16.
2. "Joker Fuel" mug
Coffee first, then jokers. Printed in the USA, dishwasher safe, and the rare hostess gift that doesn't end up in the regift closet. $18–$22.
3. A card holder
Watch any table: half the players have the National Mah Jongg League card folded under their rack. A weighted acrylic stand keeps it upright and readable. Around $24. (Buy the card itself from the League directly — it's the only place it's sold.)
$25–$50
4. "I'd Rather Be Playing Mahj" tee
Soft Bella+Canvas cotton, printed to order in the US, true to size. Honest. $32.
5. "EAST" dad hat
For whoever's dealing. Embroidered in jade thread with a small wind character on the side. $34.
6. "Take the Table" canvas tote
Fits a rolled mat, a card holder and snacks. The bag for the person who hosts at everyone else's house. $29.
7. Multicolor racks & pushers, set of 4
The classic yellow-teal-pink-blue set so everyone knows whose rack is whose. Ours ships from a US warehouse in days. $49.
$50–$100
8. A real mat
A 32" non-slip neoprene mat is the upgrade most players don't know they need until they play on one: tiles stop sliding, the wall stops creeping, and the dining table survives. Comes with a tube for travel. $54.
9. The "Crak · Bam · Dot" crewneck
Heavyweight fleece, three words every player knows, printed in the USA. Size down one for a classic fit, take your usual size for cozy. $58.
10. A matched bag set
A three-piece printed canvas set: tile tote, rack bag and a pouch for the card and dice. For the player who carries the game to the club every week. $54.
$100 and up
11. Tortoiseshell racks & pushers
The racks people actually get asked about. Solid acrylic in a classic tortoiseshell pattern, built-in pushers, anti-slip base — the look of the $150 designer sets at $109. Shop racks.
12. Lessons
If the person on your list has been saying "I should really learn" for two years, the best gift is a teacher. The American Mahjong Association and Mahjong 4 Friends both keep instructor and club directories; many teachers sell four-session gift packages. We don't sell lessons — we just think it's the best $100 you can spend.
Three things not to buy
- A second set, unless you know exactly what they want. Tile size, color and case are personal.
- A "Chinese" set for an American player. Different tile count, no jokers. See our guide to American vs. Chinese sets.
- Photocopies of the card. The League's card is copyrighted; players know, and they'll wince.
Parlor & Tile is an independent, US-based shop and is not affiliated with the National Mah Jongg League. Orders over $75 ship free in the US; apparel and mugs are printed to order and ship in days.
